Overview

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is a highly competitive, fully funded master’s scholarship for professionals from developing countries who are committed to contributing to their countries’ social and economic development. It supports studies in development-related fields at selected top universities worldwide.

Study Fields & Universities

  • Available for 44 participating master’s programs

  • Offered across 24 universities in:

    • The United States

    • Europe

    • Africa

    • Oceania

    • Japan

  • Focus areas include:

    • Economic policy management

    • Tax policy

    • Infrastructure and development management

    • Other development-related disciplines

Important: You must be admitted to one of the 44 participating programs to be eligible.

Scholarship Coverage

The JJ/WBGSP is fully funded and includes:

  • Full tuition fees

  • Monthly living stipend

  • Round-trip airfare

  • Health insurance

  • Additional travel allowance

Eligibility Criteria (Summary)

Applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of a World Bank member developing country

  • Not hold dual citizenship of a developed country

  • Be in good health

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree obtained at least 3 years before the application deadline

  • Have at least 3 years of paid, full-time development-related work experience (with limited exceptions for fragile/conflict states)

  • Be currently employed in development-related work

  • Be unconditionally admitted (except for funding) to at least one JJ/WBGSP participating master’s program outside their country of citizenship and residence

  • Not be a World Bank Group staff member or close relative

  • Not have previously declined or failed to complete a JJ/WBGSP award

All eligibility rules are strictly enforced—no exceptions.

Application Windows for 2026

The scholarship runs in two rounds:

  • Application Window 1:
    🗓 15 January – 27 February 2026

  • Application Window 2:
    🗓 30 March – 29 May 2026

The application link is only sent to candidates who:

  1. Are admitted to a participating program, and

  2. Are officially shortlisted by the university as JJ/WBGSP-eligible.

Post-Scholarship Commitment

After graduation, scholars must return to their home country to apply their skills toward national development efforts.
