Japanese Government Scholarships (MEXT) 2027 — No IELTS Needed, Fully Funded, Open to Nigerians

Japanese Government Scholarships (MEXT) 2027 — No IELTS Needed, Fully Funded, Open to Nigerians

If you have not seriously looked at Japan as a study destination, this post might change your mind.

The MEXT scholarship, funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, is one of the most generous government scholarships in the world. It pays your tuition in full, gives you a monthly living stipend of around ¥117,000 to ¥145,000 (roughly $780–$970 USD), covers your return flight, and does not require IELTS or TOEFL.

Nigeria is an eligible country. Applications open through the Japanese Embassy in Abuja.

What MEXT Actually Covers

  • Full tuition at a Japanese national university
  • Monthly stipend (¥117,000 for undergraduate research students, ¥144,000–¥145,000 for Master’s and PhD)
  • Return airfare from Nigeria to Japan
  • Arrival allowance
  • No bond — you are not required to return to Nigeria after completing your studies

That last point matters. A lot of government scholarships tie you to returning home. MEXT doesn’t.

The Two Main Application Routes

Embassy Recommendation (most common for Nigerians)

You apply through the Japanese Embassy in Abuja. The embassy shortlists candidates, conducts a written exam and interview, then forwards recommended candidates to Japanese universities and MEXT for final selection.

This route has two phases: first, the embassy selects you, then a university has to accept you. Both have to say yes.

University Recommendation

You first get admitted to a Japanese university directly, and then the university nominates you for MEXT funding. This route requires you to contact professors in Japan before applying — you need a professor to agree to supervise your research before you apply. Cold emailing Japanese professors is a real thing, and it works when done properly.

English Language Requirement

This is the part most people get wrong.

MEXT does not require IELTS or TOEFL as part of the core application. The embassy exam includes an English language paper that MEXT uses to assess your level. Some Japanese universities do require IELTS or TOEFL for direct university recommendation applications, but for the embassy route, the language test is built into their own process.

If you previously studied in English, you can note this on your application. It helps.

Fields of Study Available

MEXT covers virtually all disciplines, including engineering, sciences, humanities, social sciences, agriculture, education, medicine, and more. Japan is particularly strong in engineering, robotics, materials science, environmental science, and computer science.

You don’t have to study in Japanese. Many graduate programmes at Japanese national universities are fully in English.

Who Is Eligible

  • Nigerian nationals
  • Age: typically under 35 for Master’s applicants, under 45 for researchers, check the specific cycle
  • Bachelor’s degree (for Master’s applicants) with a minimum grade, usually a second class upper or equivalent
  • Good health
  • Not currently enrolled in or already holding a degree from a Japanese university

Application Timeline for 2027

The 2027 intake embassy applications in Nigeria typically open around April–May 2026, with submission deadlines in May–June. If you’re reading this in June 2026, the window for 2027 may still be open or just closed — check with the Japanese Embassy in Abuja directly at https://www.ng.emb-japan.go.jp for current dates.

For 2028 intake, applications will open around April 2027.

What the Exam Looks Like

The MEXT embassy exam typically covers:

  • English language (reading, grammar, essay writing)
  • Subject-specific paper relevant to your field of study
  • An interview conducted by the Japanese Embassy

Prepare for the English paper as you would any formal academic English test. The subject paper is at an undergraduate level, but can be detailed depending on the field.

Practical Tips

Research your target university and professor before applying. When you get to the interview, they will ask which university you want to attend and sometimes which lab or department. Having a clear answer, “I want to study at Tohoku University under Professor X, who works on Y”,  is taken seriously.

Japan is not a cheap country, but the MEXT stipend is designed to cover a decent standard of living. Many recipients save part of it monthly.
