Job Description

The Unix system Engineer works as part of a small team (currently 12) providing support to other Capita users within the Capita TSS Division (approx. 2000 servers), Service Managers and clients. The role includes taking ownership and responsibility of queries, incidents, service requests, maintenance, audits, changes as well as Project work and future planning assigned to the Unix support queues. We cover all varieties of Unix and Linux so there is an opportunity to widen skills both in the on-premise and cloud infrastructure

What you will be doing:

• 24 x 7 Systems support for Linux, AIX and other variants

• Provide Remote support where required

• Operating Systems Maintenance

• Change Assessments & implementations using ITSM

• Software Installations

• Reacting to logged incidents and requests.

• Liaison with 3rd party service centres and engineers as required

• Provide support for service backups

• Disaster Recovery tests

• Systems Performance tuning as required

• Systems Monitoring

• Systems Security

• Engage and assist the Technical Leads

• Proof of concept and research and development projects

• Engage and assist the Shift Hub and Operations teams Principle

 

What we are looking for:

• To assist in the provision of a high standard of technical support and service delivery as per operating level agreements.

• To participate in maintaining technical cover across the group.

• Participation where required to the on-call rota for the primary skill groups assigned to the team and in maintaining shift cover.

• Problem ownership/management.

• Provide customer interface where necessary.

• Maintain a high standard of technical project delivery and associated documentation

• Undertake training both course based and in working situations in order to further skills and knowledge

• Assist other support teams both internal and external to TSS as requested.

• Assist in the production of service improvement plans.

• Employ preventative maintenance and proactive solutions wherever possible.

• Responsibility for following standardized procedures including System security management. Change management. Problem management. Service desk call monitoring.

• Provision of documentation and adherence to procedures.

• Documentation of all installations, customization and processes, to the agreed standard.

• Undertake any other activity as requested by the Unix Operations Manager, or any other Operations Manager or Head of.

• To adhere to all relevant policies and procedures including: Management System, Physical and Logical Security, Business Continuity, Health & Safety.

Required Skills/Experience:

Operating system skills required: RedHat Linux and derivatives
System P Virtualisation (AIX LPAR’s) NIM installs and patching Solaris 10 & 11 Solaris Containers (Zones)
Experience of working in an Enterprise class Data Centre supporting 1000+ servers
Understanding of ITIL best practices

Desirable Skills/Experience:

Operating skills in: HP-UX (11i onwards) OLVM Vmware Azure or other cloud technologies
