What Is This Fellowship?

The MRC Early Independence Career Development Fellowship is one of the UK’s most prestigious pathways for researchers ready to stop working under someone else’s agenda and start building their own.

Funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) under its new Fellowship Investment Framework, this award gives you full salary funding plus 80% of your project’s full economic costs for up to five years, so you can establish your research niche, build your team, and make a genuine step-change toward independence.

It’s open to researchers of all nationalities, provided the fellowship is hosted at an eligible UK research organisation.

Who It’s For

You’re the right candidate if you:

• Hold a completed PhD or equivalent (or will complete it before the fellowship starts)
• Have a track record of productivity across previous appointments
• Have your own research plans, meaningfully distinct from your current group leader’s work
• Are you ready to start building a small independent research team
• Work within MRC’s remit: human health, from basic biomedical discovery to translational and clinical research

MRC covers a broad scientific scope, including infections and immunity, neurosciences and mental health, population health, global health, molecular and cellular medicine, and methodology.

There are no age limits or rules based on years of postdoctoral experience.

What You’re NOT Eligible For If:

• You’ve applied for an MRC fellowship within the last year, or twice before
• You’ve already secured grants as project lead that include managing postdoctoral research staff, which signals you’ve already achieved independence
• You hold a permanent academic position (unless you can demonstrate a clear career step-change, e.g., moving from a teaching-focused role into research)
• You’re clinically active; there’s a separate Clinician Scientist Fellowship for you

What the Fellowship Covers

• Your full salary for up to 5 years
• A small number of research and technical staff (commensurate with the early independence stage)
• Research consumables, equipment, and travel
• Training, data management, and dissemination costs
• Visa fees and international health surcharge for fellows and dependants
• Up to 12 months at a second UK or overseas organisation
• Public partnership activities

MRC funds 80% of the full economic cost (FEC), and your host organisation covers the remaining 20% as standard.

Key Application Sections

The application is submitted through the UKRI Funding Service (not Je-S). Your research office submits on your behalf. Key sections include:

• Vision (550 words) — what you’re trying to achieve and why it matters
• Approach (2,800 words) — your methodology, project plan with Gantt chart, and collaborations
• Reproducibility and statistical design (500 words)
• Career development (1,000 words) — why this fellowship, and how you’ll develop others
• Applicant capability (2,000 words) — your track record using the R4RI framework
• Host organisation support (1,000 words) — written by your head of department
• Sponsor statement (up to 3,000 words total) — at least one senior sponsor required
• Resources and cost justification (1,000 words)

You also need a data management plan, ethics considerations, and animal/human participation sections where applicable.

You can apply for co-funding from one of eight partner organisations:

Addiction Healthcare Goals (AHG), The Borne Foundation, DEBRA, Diabetes UK, Kidney Research UK, Macular Society, Multiple Sclerosis Society, or Parkinson’s UK.

Joint funding adds prestige, networking, and sector-specific opportunities, without changing the assessment process.

For Nigerian and African Researchers

This fellowship is explicitly open to all nationalities. If you’re a postdoctoral researcher based outside the UK with a strong publication record and a UK research organisation willing to host you, you are eligible. The fellowship covers visa fees and international health surcharge — a genuine commitment to international applicants that few UK fellowships make explicit.

Securing a UK host organisation and sponsor before applying is the critical first step. Reach out to potential hosts early — September comes faster than it looks.
