Supporting African Science and Tertiary Education (SASTE) Grant – 4th Call (2025) Overview

The SASTE Grant supports outstanding researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa in the fields of Agriculture, Forestry, Water Management, Renewable Energies, Nutritional Science, and Human and Veterinary Medicine for a research stay in Austria. Research projects involving Technical Sciences and IT within these fields are also eligible. The program aims to enhance sustainable development and innovation in the Sub-Saharan region.

Supporting African Science and Tertiary Education (SASTE) Grant – 4th Call (2025) Eligibility

  • Post-doctoral scientists under 42 years old (women under 45 if involved in childcare).
  • Must hold a research position in Africa to ensure continuation at their home institution after the research stay.
  • PhD earned outside Austria is preferred but not required.
  • Must not have studied or worked in Austria in the six months prior to applying.
  • 3–7 years of post-doctoral research experience at a university or research institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Must have a contract with their home institution for at least two more years after the research stay.
  • Must obtain confirmation from the Austrian hosting institution regarding research supervision and facilities.
  • Proficiency in English or German is required.

Supporting African Science and Tertiary Education (SASTE) Grant – 4th Call (2025) Benefits

  • Duration: 12 to 24 months (non-extendable).
  • Monthly stipend: €1,500.
  • Housing allowance: Up to €600/month.
  • Travel budget: Up to €3,000/year (for scientific visits and conferences).
  • Institutional support: Up to €2,500/year for hosting institution costs.
  • In-kind contributions from the home institution (e.g., fieldwork, equipment).

Supporting African Science and Tertiary Education (SASTE) Grant – 4th Call (2025) Application Requirements

  • Research proposal (6–10 pages) detailing objectives, methodology, relevance, and impact.
  • Motivation letter (up to 2 pages) explaining career goals and research aspirations.
  • Curriculum vitae with a list of publications and achievements.
  • Employment confirmation from the home institution for at least two more years after the research stay.
  • Recommendation letter from the head of the home institution explaining the applicant’s impact.
  • Confirmation from the Austrian hosting institution agreeing to supervise the research.
  • Copy of passport, birth certificate, and recent judicial record (not older than 3 months).

  1. Submit the required documents via email to Prof. Dr. Hubert Hasenauer at hubert.hasenauer@boku.ac.at.
  2. A formal check of eligibility.
  3. External review by two experts.
  4. Interview by the selection panel.
  5. Final selection and contract preparation.
  6. Research stay begins in Austria.
