The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill University funds exceptional African students to pursue a fully funded Master’s degree at one of the world’s most respected universities, in Montreal, Canada. It’s not just about tuition. It’s a comprehensive programme designed to invest in scholars who have the drive to lead, the record to prove it, and the commitment to give back to their communities when they return.

McGill University is consistently ranked among the top 50 universities in the world. A Master’s from McGill opens doors across academia, international development, policy, the private sector, and beyond — globally, not just in Canada.

This programme is open to citizens of all 54 African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Uganda, Cameroon, Senegal, Zimbabwe, and more. Applications are open now.

What Is the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program?

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is one of the largest and most impactful education initiatives in the world. It partners with leading universities globally to fund talented young Africans who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a genuine commitment to transforming their communities.

At McGill, the programme specifically funds postgraduate (Master’s level) study. It’s designed for scholars who have shown they can achieve academically — and who carry a clear sense of purpose about what they’ll do with that education.

Eligible Master’s Programmes at McGill

McGill offers a wide range of eligible programmes across faculties, including arts, science, engineering, education, law, management, public health, and more — covering both thesis (research-based) and non-thesis (coursework-based) tracks.

Important note for thesis programme applicants: You must NOT contact supervisors or professors directly. If you are selected for a fee waiver and are applying to a thesis programme, the McGill Mastercard Foundation team will contact you with specific instructions for securing a supervisor. Reaching out independently can disqualify your application.

Full lists of eligible thesis and non-thesis programmes are available on the McGill eligibility page.

Selection Process: What They’re Looking For

McGill’s selection committee evaluates scholars on multiple dimensions, not just grades. The strongest applications combine:

Academic strength: First Class Honours or equivalent gives you a stronger chance of admission. Solid grade trajectories matter, as does the relevance of your undergraduate degree to your chosen Master’s programme.

Leadership and service: This is not an optional background colour — it’s a core selection criterion. The programme is looking for scholars who have already demonstrated leadership in their schools, communities, professional settings, or civil society. Document it specifically: what did you do, who did you serve, what changed because of your involvement?

Financial need: The programme specifically targets students whose educational journey has been shaped by financial constraints. Be honest and direct about this in your application.

Commitment to return: The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme is fundamentally about building the next generation of African leaders who bring their skills home. Your application should reflect genuine, articulated plans for contributing back to your community and country.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Step 1: Check Eligibility Carefully

Read the full eligibility criteria on the McGill website before starting your application. Confirm your country, degree status, age, and programme fit.

Step 2: Review Eligible Programmes

Identify which McGill Master’s programme aligns with your academic background and career goals. Make sure your undergraduate degree is in a related field.

Step 3: Attend an Information Session

McGill holds official information sessions for prospective applicants. These are worth attending — they give you direct insight into what the selection committee is looking for and let you ask questions before you apply. Check the information sessions page for upcoming dates.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Apply through the official McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars portal. Complete every section thoroughly. For thesis programme applicants — do not contact supervisors before being instructed to do so.

Step 5: Wait for the Selection Outcome

Shortlisted candidates go through a multi-stage selection process. Details are available on the selection process page.

Why This Matters — Real-World Impact

A Master’s degree from McGill University doesn’t just advance your career. For African scholars, it represents access to a global network, research infrastructure, and professional credibility that has historically been gatekept by geography and financial circumstances.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme has produced graduates now working across government, international NGOs, the African Development Bank, the UN system, leading universities, and private sector organisations across the continent. These are people who came back and built things.

For Nigerian applicants specifically: the academic standard expected is high but achievable. A 2:1 degree from a Nigerian university — University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, ABU Zaria, OAU, UNILORIN, or similar — is generally competitive. What will set you apart isn’t just your grades. It’s the story of what you’ve done beyond the classroom.
