Japan is one of the world’s leading countries for science and technology research — home to more Nobel Prize winners in the 21st century than any country except the United States. The Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University) offers a structured International Graduate Program (IGP) that allows qualified international students to pursue Master’s and doctoral degrees in Japan entirely in English.
No Japanese language requirement. 18 departments participating. Spring 2027 intake applications close on 11 October 2026.
What Is the Institute of Science Tokyo?
The Institute of Science Tokyo is the merged successor institution of Tokyo Institute of Technology (one of Japan’s most prestigious STEM universities) and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, bringing together world-class research in engineering, computing, natural sciences, life sciences, and health sciences under a single institution in Tokyo.
The IGP(C) programme was established specifically to enable qualified international students with little or no Japanese language knowledge to pursue graduate degrees in Japan at the highest academic level.

JASSO Scholarships: The Japan Student Services Organization offers scholarships to international students at Japanese universities — check the Institute of Science Tokyo’s financial support pages for current availability.
University-specific support: Contact the Institute of Science Tokyo’s international student office about available institutional support.
