The International Max Planck Research School for Translational Psychiatry (IMPRS-TP) is a prestigious PhD program welcoming students from all countries with a Master’s or Medical degree in a relevant field. The program combines psychiatric research, neuroscience, and clinical translation, and is jointly run by the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry and partner institutions in Munich.
International Max Planck Research School for Translational Psychiatry (IMPRS-TP) PhD Scholarship Program 2025 Eligibility
- Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field or a Medical Degree.
- Trainee medical doctors with laboratory experience are especially encouraged to apply.
- The degree must be completed before the start of the program, not necessarily at the time of application.
- A minimum MSc grade equivalent to 2.5 in the German system is required.
- Non-native English speakers should provide proof of English proficiency (optional but recommended).
- Residency/PhD track applicants must have at least B1-level German proficiency and reach C1 level for Approbation in Germany.

✔️ Academic transcripts (High School, Bachelor’s, and Master’s)
✔️ Two short essays: one describing prior research experience, the other explaining motivation and research goals
✔️ Selection of up to 3 preferred research groups
✔️ Two letters of recommendation submitted by referees

International Max Planck Research School for Translational Psychiatry (IMPRS-TP) PhD Scholarship Program 2025 Selection Criteria
Applications are reviewed in multiple stages by IMPRS-TP faculty based on academic records, research experience, motivation, scientific background, and recommendation letters.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews (online or in-person). Successful candidates proceed to one-on-one meetings with PIs to find a research match. In-person candidates tour the institutes and explore Munich. Final admission depends on matching with a PI offering a lab position.
